(thank you to my friend, Erika, who put most of this message together when I was new to SwagBucks!)
Swagbucks is a "Get Paid To" site. The more you use it, the more you get rewarded- and you can participate for free! I just do what I think is easy and is FREE and won't invite spam and viruses. I trade in my Swagbucks (SB) 450 at a time for a $5 Amazon gift card. I average 5-10 certificates a month. Certainly not raking it in, but it's certainly nice, especially when at the very least I'll have $300 in amazon cards by Christmas! If you are more into it and do more you will get more.
So anyway, you sign up first, and then I would download their toolbar. I've never had any issues and I trust it completely. Here is a rundown on the ways I get SB.
1. SEARCH using Swagbucks Toolbar.
The way you get many of your points is by searching using Swagbucks instead of Yahoo, MSN, Google, etc. or even using your address bar. The easiest way to do this is to go to their site, swagbucks.com, and download the toolbar and install it. Then you just enter your search terms into your search field and search! You randomly win bucks. You can also go their homepage and enter a search term, but I like the Toolbar, it's much easier. On Fridays the odds of bigger amounts for your searches goes up.
2. Get your 4 points every day.
You get one for opening your browser if you have the Toolbar downloaded.
You get one for doing the Daily Poll.
You get one for going to the Trusted Surveys page (just for going, not even doing surveys!)
You also get one for going to the NOSO (No Obligation Special Offers) page and clicking "No" or "Next" on all the ads. More points for completing the offers!
You can find all of these from the Swagbucks homepage under "earn".
3. "like" the SwagBucks facebook page and often there will be daily contests and hints about hidden codes.
4. Enter codes when you find them. TSG (the Swag Guy) hides them in his blog, on the website or on his FB page.

5. Look through the Special Offers to see if there are any easy ones. Right now you can watch a few videos for 2-5 points a piece. You can find them under "ways to earn" and then "special offers". gWallet usually has some videos to watch (you have to scroll through and see). Trial Pay does too (click on them and then click "videos". Just browse around and glance through the point values. The ones under 10 are usually the easiest. Some examples of things that give you easy points are: You can "Like" something on FB or you can click through to a site and then click their banner or use their search engine.
6. The EASIEST point method that SB recently put out: SwagBucks TV. They are YouTube style videos and as you watch videos you fill up a little meter, when the meter is full you get 5SB. How much your meter moves is random per video, sometimes only 1 percent, sometimes up to 50 percent. I open up a tab in my browser and then pick a video and watch it play while I'm checking email- the videos are really fun and they have different categories you'll find one to enjoy I'm sure! It plays continuously (another video will start after the first finishes) but please be honest and don't leave it running if you aren't watching. Swagbucks knows if your "idle" and you won't get any points. You can earn a mx of 75 SB a day this way. SBTV is also a place that the codes might be on a Code Hunt. If the SwagCodez gives you a link to a video then you will see the code appear below the video (in it's title) a little ways into the video - usually in the first 30 seconds.
So you can easily get at least 79 SB a day (75 from SBTV, 4 from the click-ons) even before searching and code hunting! That alone gets you $5 amazon gift card every 5.5 days! Swagbucks has many other prizes and giveaways as well!
